LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's largest drugmaker Pfizer Inc said on Monday it will buy the British-based drugmaker to sell Viagra tablets in the United States.
Viagra, a brand name for sildenafil, is used to treat erectile dysfunction. It was the first drug approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration, and it has a much cheaper rival.
"We are very excited about Pfizer's decision to buy the opportunity to offer these high-quality tablets for sale in the United States," Pfizer said in a statement.
Viagra, the world's second-biggest medicine, had been in clinical trials before its launch in August. However, Pfizer was unable to find a supplier.
The move follows an FDA advisory last week that the drug's makers would not have to follow the U. S. Food and Drug Administration's rules.
"It is clear that the drug's approval has been in the best interest of the public," said Dr. Nachum Katlowitz, a urologist at New York University Langone Medical Center. "We are delighted with the decision to buy the opportunity to offer this high-quality product."
Pfizer's decision comes after the company said its medicines were "well tolerated by the majority of patients".
In the U. S., the drugmaker has said it would pay about $3.9 billion to resolve patent-brought patent infringement lawsuits in three European countries.
In May, the European Commission in a complaint against Pfizer said it had found no evidence of wrongdoing. In May it fined Pfizer $1.8 billion for selling counterfeit Viagra.
Pfizer said it would not comment on its own decisions about the drugs.
Pfizer, founded by Pfizer Inc, has been in clinical trials since the late 1990s. Pfizer said it had "shown the safety and efficacy of the product in clinical trials of sildenafil and the product in doses sufficient to have an effect on erectile function".Pfizer has denied wrongdoing.
The drugmaker said it would sell the medicines to U. wholesalers and other companies for $5 per pill.
